Detoxing has become something of a necessity in my daily regimen, and not because it is the latest health buzz word and all the cool kids are doing it, but I have found it to be an effective way of cleansing and regulating my system while adding a much needed boost to my energy levels. I have also come to believe that lack of proper internal cleansing is a gateway to more severe or chronic health issues.
Funny enough whenever I would complain about feeling ill or exhaustion, my mom would often jokingly say ‘you are probably just clogged up with poop.’ As silly as it sounds I believe there is a solid ring of truth behind the statement.
I used to think ‘detoxing’ was one of those things you did if you ate tofu regularly and frequented the boho sections. However if you think beyond the sexiness of the word, it really does make health sense. In this article we look at why detox is a great idea as well as signs of when to detox your body.
For anyone who’s having issues with problem skin, weight loss, low energy and the list can go on and on, I cannot recommend it enough. Especially for women experiencing issues with hormonal imbalance or irregularities, this can really help get things working properly.
A good cleanse should be the starting point towards recovery and prevention to clear your palette and reset your system. Ask any makeup artist and they’ll tell you, the best makeup application has to be done on skin that has been properly cleansed and moisturized. Same concept applies to our bodies. Cleanse and apply.
Overtime, there’s a build up of toxins in our bodies and detoxing works by helping our body to metabolize and eliminate these nasty items as waste. Where do these toxins come from? From foods and other items we ingest, stress, medications we take, pollutants in the environment and even beauty or skincare products we use on a daily basis.
There are arguments out there that your body does not need help cleansing or regulating itself, and I have to say I agree to an extent, however the modern lifestyle and diet can wreak havoc on even a well oiled machine. In today’s world of quick and go processed foods, high stress levels , it has become a necessity. Your body can only handle so much.
So when should you start a detox regimen?
It is not necessary to detox everyday, it is highly dependent on your lifestyle. Personally, I find that at minimum every month is ideal. The frequency will also be determined by the type of detox you do. There is such a wide variety programs out there, each designed to clean out different things, and some pretty hardcore products designed to be used only on occasion.
The way I see it, your body will surely communicate to you when it is time for a cleanse. There are some tell tale signs that you want to pay attention to and use as a gauge. Here’s just a few off the most common ones.
Common signs of when to detox your body
- Constant bad breath.
- Irregular, lack of or stiff bowel movements.
- Foul smelling bowel movements (worse than usual)
- Constantly feeling sleepy, groggy or irritable (when other factors check out of course).
- Problems losing weight
- Problems falling and staying asleep
- Chronic skin problems
- Allergies
- Digestive problems
Note that some of these symptoms could be signs of other health issues, so it’s important to first get checked out by a medical professional and rule out any possible ailments. If everything checks out and you’re still experiencing these issues, then a good detox is in order.
How do you detox?
Contrary to what I used to envision, a detox does not have to be a long, convoluted regimen consisting of unsavory wheat grass shots or forcing algae like substances down your throat. A regular intake of tasty green smoothie or a yummy salad along with a healthy diet can work just fine.
My current protocol is a combination of a greens cleanse with CHIOMA Daily Cleanse, an all natural herbal detox. It leaves me feeling refreshed, works wonders on my energy levels and improves the health of my hair, skin and nails. I also love our 14 Day Cleanse Green Tea Detox with Probiotics, an organic herbal tea blend that helps the body to remove impurities.
Spinach is a great cleanser because it contains high levels of chlorophyll, fiber amongst other great nutrients for your body. Lemon and vinegar are both great cleansers as well. They are high in acidic content and help to break down food particles. If you are going to use any of these ingredients, I highly recommend that you opt for the organic version. For vinegar, I personally love and highly recommend the Bragg’s brand:
Regardless of what ingredients you decide to use or how you intend to structure your detox routine, the idea is to go for products with high fiber content, lots of green foods such as leafy vegetables and preferably organic foods. You also will need to cut out on excess and processed carbohydrates, sugars, unhealthy fats, canned or processed foods and excess coffee, soda and sugar filled juices. Avoid refilling your body with junk.
Your body is a temple and you need to take care of it regularly, and cleansing should be a part of the routine.
Have gone 7 days without solid food 2xs brofee. 6 days of drinking vegetable and fruit juices, herbs, and powerful colon cleanses (a concoction containing black walnut, senna leaf powder, french clay, and stuff like that). Also did colonics once a day and had some scary stuff come out me like gall stones, parasites (tape worms), and undigested meat. After, I could sleep and awake easily, my allergies went away, I was more patient, the bags under my eyes disappeared, regular bowel movements.
Hi Salih, thank you for sharing your experience. A good cleanse does wonders for the body. Have a great day!
I have a low energy level and constant acne breakouts. Which brands of detox would you recommend? There are so many out there, it’s hard to know what to try. Thank you.
